I've finally backed up the Leafe Press website. It says something about my personality that the site's been running since 2004, and it's the first time it's been backed up. The ISP losing some data a while ago jolted me into action. The site is now preserved for posterity, and can easily be switched to another ISP if need be. For those interested, the total size of it is 23.4 megabytes, which is tiny (it's mainly text, a few graphics, no video or sound - yet). the total number of web pages is 181, most of them on Litter. The site costs me only £1.59 a month. It's now averaging about 4,500 visits a month, which is double what it was getting this time last year.

Can you tell me how to do that? Can you only do websites or is it possible to back up blogs as well?

Mind you, the ephemeral qualities of blogging are attractive.

Hi Kath

I use a piece of software called Filezilla, which is obtainable as a free download. It's an FTP client, so it allows you to simply drag-and-drop the files from the server to your machine at home, or wherever. Your ISP should provide you with logon credentials. However... Leafepress.com is not a blog, it's a standard website. To be honest, I don't know the best way to back up a blog - I've done it by simply pasting the text into a file on my hard drive. But there must be better way. Anyone else out there know?

I've just checked - you can use FTP with blogger. Once you've logged in, click on 'Help', then 'Help Center', then scroll down to 'FTP'. I haven't investigated it myself, but I suspect this would be the way to back up a blog. If I find out more I'll let you know.

It seems the FTP support is just to allow you to link to external files, so that's no good...

4500 hits a month? Yow. Pretty soon people will be saying, "Silliman, who's Silliman ...??"

Thanks - I'll investigate further. Mind you, I'm even more short of time than usual at present.
